Governor Pataki believes in empowering local governments and working closely with local officials to improve and strengthen the fiscal health of localities across the State.
- To stimulate business growth, create jobs and generate revenues locally, Governor Pataki invested in urban centers and transportation facilities, established Empire Zones to encourage economic development, and reduced taxes.
- Under Governor Patakis leadership, the State Budgets enacted since 1995 have saved municipalities and school districts more than $7 billion.
- Since 1995, counties, cities, towns, and villages have received increases in aid totaling nearly $125 million.
- In 1996, Governor Pataki created the Supplemental Municipal Aid program, which provides over $180 million in aid to localities.
- In 2000, the Governor created a new county aid program, which provides $22 million a year to New York counties.
- As part of his effort to further reduce property taxes statewide, and to make all levels of government leaner, more responsive, and more effective, Governor Pataki recently established a bi-partisan task force to review county, town and village governments and to make recommendations for cost savings and efficiency.
