Creating New Jobs and Building Our Economy

Governor Pataki’s policies have created hundreds of thousands of new private sector jobs and brought about an economic revitalization that seemed impossible just seven years ago.

When Governor Pataki took office, New York State was in a fiscal crisis. The irresponsible spending and mismanagement of “Cuomonomics” made New York State the nation’s leader in lost jobs and lost businesses. Governor Pataki turned New York State around by eliminating unnecessary regulations, lowering taxes, and adopting a new pro-business attitude.

  • Governor Pataki’s leadership and pro-growth economic policies have created over 600,000 jobs in New York State. And Governor Pataki’s job creating policies – like Empire Zones, Power for Jobs, and Job Retention Grants – have kept businesses from leaving New York, retaining hundreds of thousands of jobs for hard-working New Yorkers.

  • And when the tragic events of September 11th left New York State with 176,000 fewer jobs, Governor Pataki went to work even harder, fighting to keep and create New York jobs. Since that time, the Governor worked with Congress and the President to pass his “Liberty Zone” initiative, securing more than $21 billion in federal aid, which provides tax incentives to businesses who hire people in lower Manhattan, creates incentives for business investment in property and equipment, and allows New York City to generate $8 billion for reconstruction, development and transportation initiatives.

  • To allow businesses to grow, Governor Pataki eliminated or reformed over 2,000 government regulations, reducing red-tape and saving New Yorkers over $3 billion.

  • Site Selection Magazine now ranks New York State as 3rd in the nation in attracting new and expanded corporate facilities - our strongest ranking ever and a step above last year's 4th place finish. In 2001 New York attracted 988 expansion projects, compared with only 75 in 1994 when the State placed a disappointing 20th nationally.

  • Thanks to Governor Pataki, New York State is a national and world leader in high-technology research, business creation and job growth.

  • Governor Pataki fostered growth in New York’s high-tech and biotech industries by investing more than $1 billion in the State’s technology business sector and our world-class research laboratories and academic centers.

  • Small Times magazine, which tracks the fast-growing small-tech industry, ranked the New York Metro area as one of the nation’s top four “Hot Spots” and New York State as one of six “Places to Watch” in the race to become the nation’s economic center in the nanotechnology and microsystems technology industries.
