Governor Pataki's health care initiatives have made New York State a national leader in providing access to affordable, quality health care.

  • Thanks to the leadership of Governor Pataki, New York’s Child Health Plus has become a nationally recognized children’s health program – providing more than 500,000 previously uninsured, low-income children with quality health care.

  • Governor Pataki created Family Health Plus, a program that gives 700,000 currently uninsured parents and single adults access to the best health care in the nation.

  • Governor Pataki expanded the EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage) program, providing nearly 300,000 low and moderate-income senior citizens access to needed prescription drugs.

  • Governor Pataki supported women’s special health care needs by enhancing screening programs, banning the practice of drive-through mastectomies, and supporting innovative research into the cause and possible cures for breast cancer.

  • Governor Pataki has also strengthened hospital and clinic care for the poor and greatly enhanced anti-smoking campaigns.

  • Governor Pataki introduced a "Drive Out Diabetes" custom license plate to New York motorists to help fight diabetes by raising funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the American Diabetes Association while calling attention to the disease. Nearly 500,000 New Yorkers with diabetes remain undiagnosed and more than 800,000 have been diagnosed.

  • And under Governor Pataki’s leadership, New York State has invested $73 million to improve access to health care in rural areas.
Governor Pataki’s Historic Healthcare Reform Act improves health care for all New Yorkers by:
  • Recruiting and retaining the best health care workers.

  • Providing life-saving breast and cervical cancer treatments to uninsured and underinsured low-income women.

  • Expanding medical coverage to working disabled citizens.
