Governor Pataki's crime-fighting leadership has resulted in dramatic, across-the-board reductions in crime that lead the nation, making our streets safer for law-abiding New Yorkers.
Under Governor Patakis crime-fighting leadership:
- Violent crime has been reduced by 43%.
- Murder has dropped 51%.
- Robbery is down 52%.
- Burglary is down 47.6%.
- New York ranks first in reducing violent crime, among the ten most populous states.
- Statewide, reports of violent crime are at its lowest level since 1975.
Governor Patakis successful crime-fighting polices include:
- Ending parole for violent felons.
- Taking the lead in using DNA evidence to solve crimes.
- Reinstating the death penalty.
- Enacting sweeping gun safety laws.
- Creating tough new laws to punish terrorists.
- Enacting Megan's Law to notify communities when convicted child molesters move into the neighborhood.
- Requiring all sex offenders to register in their communities.
- Expanding the rights of victims to receive compensation from convicted criminals.
- Barring rapists and murderers from the work release program.

The result of Governor Patakis crime-fighting policies has been a steady decrease in crime and, for the first time in more than 20 years, a decrease in the demand for prison space.
The Governors policies have saved hard-working New Yorkers more than $50 million in 2001-2002, with additional savings anticipated in future years.
